Frequently asked questions
What is a normal BMI?
18.5–24 is considered normal, below 18.5 underweight, 24–28 overweight and 28+ obese (Chinese adult reference ranges). BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes should treat it as a rough guide.
How is the healthy weight range computed?
Lower bound = 18.5 × height(m)², upper bound = 24 × height(m)². For 170 cm that works out to roughly 53.5–69.4 kg — the tool fills in your own height.
Who should not rely on BMI?
Muscular athletes may show "overweight" while actually lean, and the adult cutoffs do not apply during pregnancy or to children, who need age- and sex-specific percentile charts. It is a screening guide, not a diagnosis.
