Frequently asked questions
How is the word count computed?
Words are counted as runs of letters and digits, so a continuous Chinese sentence may count as few words; for Chinese text use the "Chinese characters" or total character metrics instead.
Does the character count include spaces?
The total includes spaces and newlines; a separate "without whitespace" figure is also shown — most submissions ask for the latter.
What is the UTF-8 byte count for?
For byte-limited fields like database columns or API payloads — a Chinese character takes 3 bytes in UTF-8, so character count alone can be misleading.
